Adaptive Dance

This unique class provides training in creative dance, ballet and jazz basics to children with various developmental, behavioral, and physical challenges.  Each student is paired with a student from one of the studio’s advanced classes for a one-on-one dance experience.  

The class is provided free of charge and performance opportunities are available in the annual production of The Nutcracker and the year end recital.

Under the direction of creator Heather Fryxell, former principal ballerina and educational psychology graduate, this program is currently being implemented at several schools in the United States, and it has been in existence at Wasatch Dance since 2006.  Its syllabus incorporates dance exercises with physical, cognitive, and behavioral programs to help each student achieve a full dance experience and strengthen their various abilities.

Alison Russell, graduate in recreational therapy and ballet instructor, is the principal teacher of the program at Wasatch Dance Center.

Ballet Program

Class Schedule

Class Attire: Hair must be pulled back and in a bun.

  • For Creative Movement, Preparatory Ballet, Children's Ballet, and Elementary Ballet: Light pink leotard (any style), Capezio light pink convertible tights, and pink leather ballet slippers.

  • For Ballet Division 1: Mint (Must wear MotionWear brand), Capezio light pink convertible tights, and pink leather ballet slippers.

  • For Ballet Division 2: Royal Blue (Must wear MotionWear brand), Capezio light pink convertible tights, and pink leather ballet slippers.

  • For Ballet Division 3: Pacific Blue (Must be Wear Moi brand), Capezio light pink convertible tights, and pink leather ballet slippers.

  • For Ballet Division 4: Lilac (Must be Wear Moi brand), BodyWrappers pink tights with back seam, and pink leather ballet slippers and/or pointe shoes.

  • For Ballet Division 5: Navy Blue (Must be Wear Moi brand), BodyWrappers pink tights with back seam, and pink leather ballet slippers and/or pointe shoes.

  • For Ballet Division 6: Maroon (Must be Wear Moi brand), BodyWrappers pink tights with back seam, and pink leather ballet slippers and/or pointe shoes. May wear matching skirt to ballet classes.

  • For Ballet Division 7: Prune (Must be Wear Moi brand), BodyWrappers pink tights with back seam, and pink leather ballet slippers and/or pointe shoes. May wear matching skirt to ballet classes.

  • Company dancers must wear a matching skirt to company classes and rehearsals.

  • All dancers may wear any color leotard the first class of the month all year and for Nutcracker rehearsals.

Creative Movement    Ages 3-4

Class focuses on beginning ballet, modern, & jazz skills. Class sizes are small to build the student teacher relationship and confidence. This class will have the opportunity to perform in both December and May.

Preparatory Ballet    Ages 4-5

Class focuses on beginning ballet, modern, & jazz skills. Rhythm, coordination, and class etiquette is introduced in this curriculum. This class will have the opportunity to perform in both December and May.

Children's Ballet  Ages 5-6

This class is an introduction to the art form of classical ballet, basic positions of the arms and legs will be introduced, as well as basic locomotor steps. Emphasis is also put on rhythm, musicality, and expression through movement and dance.

Elementary Ballet  Ages 6-7

This class is a continuation of the introduction to classical ballet. Emphasis is still on exploring basic positions and locomotor steps. As well as rhythm, musicality, and expression through movement and dance.

60 minute class/week

Ballet Division 1 Ages 7-9

Emphasis will be put on placement of the body, the arms, the legs, and the head, as well as developing elementary skills in the coordination of steps.

75 minute class/week

BALLET DIVISION 2 AGES 7-9

Emphasis will be put on placement of the body, the arms, the legs, and the head, as well as developing elementary skills in the coordination of steps.

Two 75 minute class/week

Ballet Division 3  Ages 9-11

Emphasis will be put on coordination between movements and repetition.

Two 75-90 minute classes/week

Ballet Division 4  Ages 10-12

Emphasis will be put on strengthening of the legs and feet through exercises on demi pointe. Exercises en tournant will be stressed in center, as well as the study of pirouettes.

Two 90 minute classes/week

Ballet Division 5  Ages 11-13

The following elements will be stressed at this level: strengthening the stability in various and multiple turns, the technique of beats, strengthening demi pointe and pointe work, and further develop smooth and graceful movement with the arms and body.

Three 90 minute classes/week

Ballet Division 6  Ages 13-15

Longer and more complicated forms of adagio, allegro, and exercises on pointe will be stressed at this level, along with mastering the technique of beats, tours in big poses and elevation in grand allegro jumps.

Four 90 minute classes/week

Ballet Division 7  Ages 14-18

In this level, the development of ballon quality in grand allegro will be stressed, along with more complicated combinations in a quicker tempo. The execution of fundamental movements are carried through with finishing touches and artistry.

Four 75-90 minute classes/week

Hip-Hop Program          

Class Schedule

Class Attire: Hair must be pulled back. Student must wear clothing that they can move in (no jeans) and non-marking tennis shoes.

Children's and Elementary Hip-Hop Ages 5-6

This class is for very beginner dancers.  It teaches basic hip hop and break-dancing movement.

Hip-Hop 1 and 2 ages 6-8

This class is a beginner level class.  It teaches basic hip hop movements, basic break-dancing skills, and we begin working on individual free style.

Hip-Hop 3 ages 7-9

This class is an intermediate level class.  It teaches hip hop movement, a variety of hip hop styles, basic break-dancing skills, and we work on individual free style.

Jazz & Lyrical Program

Class Schedule

Class Attire: Hair must be pulled back. Dance pants, capri's, or bike shorts with a leotard or dance top that fits to their body line. Capezio Carmel gore boots, foot thongs or bare paws, and Capezio Carmel stirrup tights.

Children's Jazz  Ages 5-6

This class introduces structured warm-up, stretching and across the floor techniques. The curriculum is centered around traditional jazz style, precision and musicality.

Tap Program

Class Schedule

Class Attire: Hair must be pulled back and student must wear clothing that is easy to move and flat black tap shoes.

Pre Tap              Ages 3-4

We will be learning about parts of the feet, and what they can DO especially when placed in a TAP SHOE! The fundamentals of tap and a whole lot of FUN. The student will learn: basic tap steps, sequencing, memorization, rhythm, spacial relations, and artistic creativity through tap.

Children's Tap    Ages 5-6

A start to basic tap techniques and rhythms. They will learn the basic tap steps that will be the building blocks for more advanced levels. This is a class with plenty of energy and noisy fun!

Tap 1 and Tap 2  Ages 7-9

Main goals of the program are following directions, building a basic tap dance vocabulary that will help the students form a solid foundation of tap technique, exploring tap dancing as an entertaining/acting form through age appropriate tap music. Students will be challenged in class by learning short combinations, creating combinations on their own, learning basic tap counts and how to apply them to their tap dancing steps and by playing fun games to help students remember their tap vocabulary.

Tap 3  Ages 9-11

This level introduces the Students to fundamental tap techniques arranged in combinations and performed in class as solo or group demonstrations. The Students take an active part in the creation of combinations. They will learn how to perform with energy and how to bring their own personality to each and every performance. The main goals in this level is identifying, utilizing, and demonstrating tap terminology as well as understanding tap as a form of entertainment. Students will learn different elements of classical, rhythmic and modern tap dancing.

Tap 4  Ages 10-12

This level is very similar to tap level 3. The students will learn more advanced tap moves and be expected to pickup combinations more quickly.

Tap 5  Ages 11-12

In this level, students are expected to create more complex sounds and combinations while incorporating challenging temp and rhythm changes to their movements. The class will become more fast paced as students develop more speed and control of their footwork allowing them to experiment with different counting patterns and level changes.

Tap 6  Ages 13-15

This level is similar to tap level 5. The students are expected to learn more quickly. Steps and combinations are quite advanced at this level.

Tap 7  Ages 14-18

This is the most advance level of tap offered at the studio. By this level, the students are very well rounded tap dancers that have been exposed to many forms of tap and can execute those confidently. They are expected to pickup choreography very quickly. They should feel confident in their tap abilities and be able to know all terminology and execution of any step presented to them.

Tumbling/Acrobatics Program

Class Schedule

Class Attire: Hair must be pulled back and student must wear clothing that they can move in and avoid excess layers and loose fitting clothes for safety. Tumblers must be bare-footed.

Jungle Gym    Ages 18 months - 3 yrs

A fun, high-energy Parent-Tot class that focuses on tumbling, coordination, gross motor skills, rhythm, and social development.

Pre-Tumbling    Ages 4-5

Designed to teach basic tumbling skills including forward and backward rolls, headstands, mini-handstands, and bridges. Focus is on building strength, coordination, and balance with safe, progressive learning blocks in a fun, fast-paced class.

Children's  and Elementary Tumbling    Ages 5-7

Balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility are developed while introducing tumbling fundamentals including forward and backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, bridges, and much more. Safety and Success through progressions are key to this beginning tumbling class.

Tumbling 1 and Tumbling 2     Ages 7-9

Basic tumbling skills are introduced while strength, stamina, and flexibility are improved. Fun progressions are taught to keep students positive and safe. Skills include various rolls, handstands, bridges, standing limbers, cartwheels, beginning round-offs. Future dancers will greatly benefit from this class designed for ages 7 and up with no or limited tumbling experience.

TUMBLING 3    AGES 8-10  

Continued development of tumbling skills including advanced handstands, cartwheels, dive cartwheels, round-offs, limber kick-overs, and beginning front/back walkovers. Emphasis on improved technique, flexibility, stamina, and strength that will benefit future dancers. Students must be able to do a cartwheel, standing back limber, and beginning handstand to enroll in class.

Tumbling 4    Ages 9-11

Continued development of tumbling skills including advanced handstands, cartwheels, dive cartwheels, round-offs, limber kick-overs, beginning front/back walkovers, and beginning back handsprings. Emphasis on improved technique, flexibility, stamina, and strength that will benefit future dancers. Students must be able to do a beginning round-off, standing back limber, and handstand to enroll in class.

Tumbling 5    Ages 10-12

Tumbling skills continue to improve in quality and difficulty in this fast-paced class. Students will learn front/back walkovers, valdez, back handsprings, front handsprings, and beginning aerials, as well as a variety of skills that will enhance dance routines. Strength, stamina, and flexibility continue to develop as well as refined technique. 

60 minute class/week

Tumbling 6    Ages 12-14

Tumbling skills continue to improve in quality and difficulty in this fast-paced class. Students will learn back handsprings, aerials, valdez, front handsprings, as well as a variety of skills that will enhance dance routines. Strength, stamina, and flexibility continue to develop as well as refined technique.

Tumbling 7    Ages 14-18 (high school)

Tumbling skills continue to improve in quality and difficulty in this fast-paced class. Students will learn back handsprings, aerials, valdez, front handsprings, and back tuck, as well as a variety of skills that will enhance dance routines. Strength, stamina, and flexibility continue to develop as well as refined technique. Students must be able to do a round-off, back and front walkover, and advanced handstand to enroll in this class.

Conditioning

This class focuses on strengthening & toning of the major muscle groups of the body to help dancers prevent injury and build power & endurance. 

Yoga

An all-levels class utilizing breath in movement and self-awareness. This class also helps dancers understand healthy body alignment and gently increases flexibility, balance, and strength to compliment dance training. 

Nutrition

Students will learn that Dancers are athletes who need to fuel and hydrate their bodies for optimal performance. Whole foods and minimally processed food choices will be discussed and often sampled. They will be encouraged to try new foods, have a healthy body image, and treat their bodies well from the inside out.
